Parowan City is accepting formal applications for a part-time Crossing Guard for the 2023-24 school year.  This position works Monday through Thursday from 7:30 – 8:15 a.m. and again from 2:30 – 3:00 p.m., and Fridays from 7:30 – 8:15 and again from 12:00 – 12:30 p.m. at the Main St. and 100 North intersection in Parowan.

Wage is $10.74 per shift (2 shifts/day, M-F).  Works under the general supervision of the School Resource Officer.

If necessary, Parowan City is willing to hire two crossing guards – one to cover the morning shift and one to cover the afternoon shift.

Essential Functions:

  • Turns on flashing caution lights along main road to warn motorists of students crossing the road.  Sets up orange cones in the road by the cross walk.
  • Slows down, flags, stops and directs traffic according to established traffic control procedures; directs traffic to continue.
  • Crossing Guard duties are performed during the morning and after school every day while school is in session.
  • Instructs students on proper safety procedures and precautions.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of equipment; replaces old or worn equipment as necessary.
  • Informs School Resource Officer of any problems; requests needed supplies; ensures payroll time sheets are submitted promptly and accurately to the City Recorder.
  • Observes road traffic to determine best timing for road crossings; admits children and pedestrians into designated crossing locations; escorts children and pedestrians as needed to assure safe crossings.
  • Monitors behavior of children and educates children regarding traffic safety as appropriate.  Observes general activity while on duty to detect suspicious behaviors; reports such observations.
  • May prepare various reports related to work time and work activities; performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

1.  Education and Experience:

     A.     Sufficient education to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above and related duties:  AND

     B.     Sufficient experience to demonstrate a working knowledge of practices and procedures associated with the above duties:  OR

     C.     An equivalent combination of education and experience.

2.      Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Some knowledge of local traffic laws; some knowledge of basic traffic safety; some knowledge of basic first aid; some knowledge of basic interpersonal communication skills; some knowledge of the operation of traffic signalization equipment and semaphores.

3.      Special Qualifications:

Must be willing to tolerate working in all weather extremes.
